Hamas is a Palestinian group that originated in the early days of the 1987 Palestinian intifada against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. During the 1990s, Hamas gained prominence for opposing the peace accords signed in Oslo in 1994 between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, which then represented the majority of Palestinians.

Hamas’s founding charter defines the historic Palestinian territories, including modern-day Israel, as Islamic land and excludes any permanent peace with the Jewish state.

Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and has vowed to destroy Israel. In October 2023, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip, leading to an escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to Joe Biden, president of the United States, Hamas’ attack against Israel had the objective of ruining the rapprochement between that country and Saudi Arabia.

According to CNN Español, the positions of several countries in the region regarding the escalation of violence that broke out in October 2023 between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip. Some governments condemned Hamas’ attacks against Israel, others expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and others called for dialogue and a peaceful solution to the conflict.

In addition, some analysts have pointed out that the relief of sanctions on Venezuela by the United States could have effects on the oil market and on trade relations with Colombia.

The relationship between Venezuela and Hamas has generated criticism and rejection from other Latin American countries, which have expressed their solidarity with Israel and their concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. It has also generated conflicting opinions among the media and the columnists, who have debated the political, economic and moral implications of this alliance.

The relationship between Colombia and Hamas is tense and conflictive. Colombia is one of Israel’s main allies in Latin America, and has maintained close cooperation on security, trade and innovation. Colombia has also condemned Hamas attacks against Israel, and has expressed support for Israel’s right to fend.

However, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has harshly criticized Israel for its military response to Hamas, accusing it of committing “genocide” and “barbarism” against the Palestinian people. Petro has also compared Israel to the Nazis, saying Gaza reminds him of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

These statements have provoked a strong reaction from Israel, which has suspended security exports to Colombia, and has called the Colombian ambassador in Tel Aviv for a “reprimand conversation”³. Israel has also called Petro “hostile” and “anti-Semitic,” and said his words endanger the lives of Jews in Colombia.

The diplomatic crisis between Colombia and Israel has generated concern in the international community, and has been reported by several media outlets. Some analysts have warned about the possible economic, political and humanitarian consequences of this deterioration in relations between the two countries.
