Mexican Fallen Soldiers 2025:

Mario Alberto was originally from Ixtepec, Oaxaca, nicknamed “Lover Martínez” he died during a massive bombardment with drones launched by Russian forces on June 9th, 2025 throughout various Ukrainian cities.

Earlier this year I had a conversation with Kapon, a member-leader of a new unit comprised mostly of all Mexican volunteer soldiers in Ukraine who had met Mario and trained alongside him. The unit goes by the name “Miquiztli Force” Mexicans fighting in Ukraine. I had previously interviewed Kapon for Ukraine Today.

My conversation with him is below:

MOC: How did you meet Martinez and when did you learn of his death?

Kapon: We learned of his death on June 11th of this year. Several Mexicans here in two brigades knew him.

MOC: Is it true that Martinez went to the United States, where he was in the Delta group [presumably at the Pentagon], and from there was sent to Ukraine? -This according to El Heraldo, a Mexican newspaper

Kapon: We don’t fully understand his work with that group, but he was never deployed by the United States.

MOC: Can they or cannot use emblems of other countries where they are originally from, even if they are enlisted in the Ukrainian military?

Kapon: Is it possible? For safety reasons, we pretend to be from other countries.

MOC: Are they guaranteed that their family will acquire Ukrainian nationality if the war is won?

Kapon: No

MOC: Have they been provided with support in the form of pay from the Ukrainian military while they are active?

Kapon: Yes, we receive a salary, like any other Ukrainian soldier.

MOC: Do they have days off after serving on frontline missions?

Kapon: Yes, we have days off.

MOC: Have they suffered any injuries while on the front line?

Kapon: Yes, several of us have been injured, some more seriously than others.

MOC: Why did they decide to travel to Ukraine and be part of the fight against the Russian invasion?

Kapon: The truth is, it varies depending on Mexico.

But in general, we want to gain experience and use what we learned here to improve Mexico and achieve change.

MOC: What would you like to share with Mexico and the world about the war in Ukraine?

Kapon: Not much. The truth is, many Mexicans wish us dead just for being on the side of Ukraine. We have nothing to prove to them.

MOC: What is your specialty and have you received additional training?

Kapon: Everyone has different specializations, and we’ve been training for two months since the beginning.

MOC: Do you think the war will continue for much longer, and what do you need most?

Kapon: The war is going to be long.

And I would like to say that we are not mercenaries.

Anyone who calls us mercenaries, whether individuals or media outlets, is an ignorant sensationalist who doesn’t understand the international laws governing mercenary designations.

No foreigner who is part of the Ukrainian army, holds a rank, a military ID, is governed by Ukrainian military laws, and represents the Ukrainian government can be considered a mercenary.

The same applies to the Russian side.
