« Je ne sais pas pourquoi il revient ; parce que les gens devraient le rejeter à coups de pierres… Mais, non ; ils le réclament ! La rue réclame un chef ! »
C’est ainsi qu’il y a plus de deux ans déjà, en juillet 2012, un ami journaliste, tunisien, me faisait part de ses craintes à propos d’un certain Béji Caïd Essebsi, ce dinosaure de l’ancien régime qui sera probablement élu haut la main, dans quelques jours, au terme du second tour des élections présidentielles.
« Je ne vois pas pourquoi on va chercher dans le passé », s’indignait à la même époque une célèbre avocate de Tunis, militante des Droits de l’Homme internationalement reconnue. « Chercher quelqu’un qui a participé à la politique répressive de Bourguiba, quelqu’un qui a été ministre de l’Intérieur et d’abord directeur de la Sûreté, responsable d’actes de torture vraiment graves…
On a eu des témoignages. On a organisé une rencontre maghrébine, pour parler de torture et pour écouter des témoignages de victimes. Je ne vous dis pas à quel point c’était terrible !
Les gens racontaient comment Essebsi arrivait, en personne, avec son cigare et son nœud papillon. Il voit les gens enchaînés à même le sol. Il demande : ‘Ils sont toujours vivants ces salauds !?’, avec un air hautain, en secouant les cendres de son cigare. Alors que d’autres ministres de Bourguiba étaient venus les voir et, en sortant, ils leur disaient : ‘Que Dieu vous aide’… »
Naïveté d’une « société civile » mort-née, que d’avoir laissé se porter candidat les renégats « dégagés », aux mains tâchées de sang ?

More than two years ago, in July 2012, a Tunisian friend and reporter shared his fears with me. They concerned a certain Béji Caïd Essebsi, dinosaur of the old regime, who will probably be elected by a wide margin in a few days time, at the end of the second round of the presidential elections.
“I do not see why we go and look in the past”, said an internationally known human rights lawyer in Tunis indignantly at the same point in time. “Looking for someone who participated in the repressive politics of Bourguiba, someone who has been minister of the interior after being director of security, responsible of very severe acts of torture…
We have witnesses. We organised a Maghreb meeting to talk about torture and to listen to what the witnesses had to say. I cannot tell you how terrible it was!
The people told how Essebsi himself arrived, with his cigar and his bow tie. He sees the people in chains on the floor. He asks: ‘Are these bastards still alive!?’, with an arrogant tone in his voice and shaking the ash off his cigar. When other ministers of Bourguiba had been there the same day to see them and, when leaving, told them: ‘May God help you’…”
Is it the naivety of a dead-born civil society, which let those deposed renegades with blood on their hands be candidates again?

هذا بالضبط ما قاله لي صحفي تونسي في تموز 2012 ، لقد عبر لي عن مخاوفه فيما يتعلق بالباجي قائد السبسي، هذا الديناصور الذي ينتمي إلى نظام زين العابدين بن علي والذي قد يتم انتخابه رئيسا للجمهورية في الدورة الثانية من الانتخابات الرئاسية.
يقول محام تونسي ناشط في مجال الدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان معروف دوليا :لا أفهم لماذا علينا البحث في الماضي. لماذا البحث عن شخص ساهم في السياسات القمعية لبورقيبة وكان وزيرا للداخلية ومن ثم مديرا للأمن ومسؤولا عن أعمال تعذيب فظيعة. يضيف: لدينا شهادات كما أننا نظمنا لقاء مغاربيا من أجل الحديث عن التعذيب ومن أجل سماع شهادات الضحايا. لا أستطيع أن أصف لكم إلى أي مدى كان ذلك مروعا.
لقد حكى بعضهم عن سلوك السبسي في الماضي وكيف كان يأتي مرتديا ربطة عنق وحاملا سيجاره ليشاهد السجناء المقيدين إلى الأرض. يقول هل ما زالوا أحياء هؤلاء الأوغاد؟ في حين أن وزراء آخرين في عهد بورقيبة كانوا يقولون حين رؤيتهم للسجناء فليكن الله في عونكم.
